St Matthew’s Bethnal Green is a Church of England church, in the Diocese of London, and is the focus of an inclusive, living Christian community. We gather on Sundays and at many times during the week to worship Christ, pray, learn, socialise, and work together to make the world a better place.
Our main service is on Sunday at 10.30am.
What can you expect from us?
- We are liberal catholic in tradition — that means many of our services are eucharists (also called Holy Communion or Mass), and we celebrate the role of the saints and of ancient Christian practices & traditions in our worshipping life.
- We actively affirm LGBTQ+ people and many of the leaders & worshippers in our church are LGBTQ. We are part of the Inclusive Church network.
- We are big on making community together: some of us have been here for decades, others only for a few months, but we work together across all lines of difference, trusting in God’s Spirit to equip us to seek God’s Kingdom in the world.
In addition to Sundays, we also have services at the following times:
- Rosary group: fortnightly on a Wednesday at 6pm
- Mass: Wednesday, 7.30pm. In Church.
- Mass at Silk Court Care Home: Thursday, 11.30am
- Choir Church for children: Thursday, 4pm. In Church.

If you’re interested in having a wedding, prayers of thanksgiving after a civil wedding or civil partnership, baptism, or funeral in our church, please contact us or find more information here. Please get in touch with the Administrator on 0207 7739 7586 or admin@st-matthews.org.uk if you have any questions.
If you are researching your family history, we are not likely to have the records on site if they predate 1990. Your best bet is to reach out to the London Metropolitan Archives in Clerkenwell where all our old records are stored.
Safeguarding
The parish of St Matthew’s is committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and adults. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officer(s), PSOs. The Diocese of London’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) who advise our PSOs. If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the PSO at bcjw57@gmail.com, or the DSA (Stepney) Jo Bingham: safeguarding@london.anglican.org
If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority Children or Adults Services.
